Unhappy with her job and her loser boyfriend, Tess takes a secretarial post at a major Wall Street firm. Her boss is Katharine Parker, an outwardly affable yuppie whose grinning visage hides a wicked and larcenous propensity for exploiting the ideas of her employees. For anyone who's ever won. For anyone who's ever lost. And for everyone who's still in there trying.

Trivia:
Melanie Griffith was suffering from alcohol and cocaine addiction throughout the filming of the movie.

One morning during filming, Melanie Griffith was so wasted that production had to be shut down until she could say her lines coherently. $75,000 was taken out of her paycheck to fund the reshoot.

The lobby of the 7 World Trade Center was the filming location for The Petty Marsh lobby scenes. The building would later be destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The part of Bob Speck was played by Kevin Spacey who was brought in as a last-minute replacement for another actor. On the day the scene was shot, Mike Nichols sent a car to Spacey's New York apartment, with a copy of the script in the back seat. Spacey learned his lines while on the way to the shoot.
