Where did you watch this movie?

This offbeat, exuberant and enlightening saga revolves around the life of Ishaan Awasthi, an eight-year-old whose world is filled with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate; colours, fish, dogs and kites are just not important in the world of adults, who are much more interested in things like homework, marks and neatness. Ishaan just cannot seem to get anything right in class. He gets into far more trouble than his parents can handle, and is packed off to a boarding school to ‘be disciplined’. Things are no different at his new school, and Ishaan has to contend with the added trauma of separation from his family. One day a new art teacher bursts onto the scene, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, who infects the students with joy and optimism. He breaks all the rules of ‘how things are done’ by asking them to think, dream and imagine, and all the children respond with enthusiasm, all except Ishaan. Nikumbh soon realizes that Ishaan is not happy being at school, and sets out to discover why. With time, patience and care, he ultimately helps Ishaan find himself.

When Rajan and Ishaan are talking in the corridors, Rajan says he lives in the staff quarters as opposed to in the normal student dorm. Later on, Ram asks Rajan where Ishaan is, and Rajan says he saw him leave the student dorm early. If Rajan lived in the staff quarters, he wouldn't know this.

Continuity
During the scene in which Ram goes to visit Ishaan's parents, he is stopped at a bus station and sees a kid serving tea, a man with a black shirt walks behind him. The shot cuts to Ram and then back to the kid serving tea doing something different, but that same-black shirted man is walking behind him.

Continuity
When Yohaan opens the door to get the newspaper and milk on Sunday, he has his knapsack slung on his right shoulder. Immediately after this, he goes to Ishaan's door and says, "Inu, Papa aa gaye." His bag can be seen slinging from his left shoulder at this time. However, again when Ishaan is sitting with his father and Yohaan leaves, his bag is again seen slinging from his right shoulder.

Continuity
During the song "Jame Raho," which portrays the busy and mechanical life of the family, Maya is shown ironing a striped short for Nandkishore. Next cut, he is shown actually wearing a plain shirt instead of the just hurriedly ironed shirt.
Trivia:
Creative director Amole Gupte created most of the paintings credited to Ishaan.

Salman Khan is suggested the movie's title to Aamir Khan at a party.

Aamir Khan received special permission from Amitabh Bachchan to use Abhishek Bachchan's experiences in the film. Abhishek had also struggled with dyslexia in his childhood.

Child actor Darsheel Safary faced a lot of opposition from his school when he was shortlisted for the film. The fact that he would have to miss school for so long did not go down well with the school authorities. However, Aamir Khan insisted that only Darsheel play the character, and personally assured the school authorities that Darsheel's studies wouldn't be hampered with. Aamir arranged for personal tuition for Darsheel all through the academic year, and also funded his studies and his educational expenses.
