Bharat is an obedient and well-mannered boy from a good family. When he goes to assist his grandfather in availing his pension, they are mistreated by corrupt and lazy government employees. Bharat loses his temper and reacts aggressively, for which he is beaten and abused. He changes his ways, stops going to school and begins smoking. His heartbroken mother beats him and throws him out of the village.
After reaching a bigger town, Bharat saves the life of Lakshmi Prasad, a young boy, whose father, Bangaraiah is a miserly man. However, thinking that he can use Bharat for his own profit, Bangaraiah adopts him.
Swati is a social activist who tries to inspire Bharat into fighting for social causes. Bangaraiah's son Lakshmi Prasad falls in love with the daughter of a wealthy, cunning and corrupt contractor. After finding out that Bangaraiah owns Lakshmi Nagar, and a area in which highest quality granite can be mined, the contractor agrees to the marriage.
