In ancient India, the kingdom of Ujjaini is ruled by Maharaj Raja Vijay Singh (Pran), a wise king. His only daughter, Princess Indumathi (Jayaprada) falls in love with Ramu, a brave young man, who works as a gardener in the palace.
Instead of completely rejecting the relationship, the King states that he would be willing to permit their marriage, if Ramu can find a way to gain status and wealth equal to his own, a seemingly impossible task.
In the same kingdom, there lives Mantrik Husair (Kader Khan), a powerful sorcerer who practices the black arts. His desire is to posses the powerful idol of Pataal Bhairavi that would grant him any boon, to fulfil his lust for power and make himself invincible.
In order to acquire the Idol he would need to travel to its current location and take over possession. Needing a guide with the expertise to take him to the remote location, he identifies Ramu has the best person and traps him with the promise to help him marry the Princess.
In truth, Husair's plan is to sacrifice Ramu to the goddess after reaching the destination. However, Ramu learns of true intention, turns the tables on him, kills him in front of the Idol and takes ownership of it. With its blessing, he gains enough wealth and status to marry the Princess, but Husair uses his supernatural powers to come back to life, steals the idol and kidnaps the Princess. Will Ramu succeed in defeating Husair once more and finally marry the princess?
