Trivia:
This film is an adaptation of the 1982 musical of the same name, which in turn is based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical 1963 film 8½.

It was easy to obtain the rights to make a play out of Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 (1963); his only condition was that neither his name nor the title 8 1/2 should be connected to it.

Daniel Day-Lewis and Judi Dench had earlier worked together onstage in a 1989 production of "Hamlet", as Hamlet and Gertrude. Day-Lewis infamously broke down during a scene and abruptly left the stage, never to return. Before filming began for "Nine", Day-Lewis sent Dench a note saying, "I promise not to run out on you this time."
