Trivia:
Yash Chopra came up with the idea for the movie while he was reading a poem by his longtime friend Sahir Ludhianvi, who also became the film's lyricist.

The film had been written keeping in mind Rakhee, who had agreed to do it, but before production started she married Gulzar, who wanted her to retire from acting. Yash Chopra persuaded Gulzar to let her do the film.

The movie was shot in Kashmir. The cast stayed together as a family and even brought their families with them to Kashmir (they were used as extras in the wedding scenes). It was one of Chopra's happiest experiences and he described the production as a honeymoon.

Parveen Babi was the original choice for the role opposite Rishi Kapoor.
