This epic Civil War drama is based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel of the same name and focuses on the life of petulant and hard-headed belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh). Starting with her idyllic life on a sprawling plantation, the film traces Scarlett’s survival through the tragic history of the South during and after the American Civil War, and her tangled love affairs with Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). Hattie McDaniel was the first Black American to win the Oscar for her portrayal of Mammy.
