Newspaper editor Shrivastav is on the verge of exposing the underworld which has a client base of rich and influential people. Shrivastav gets killed and CID officer Shekhar is assigned to solve the case, While solving he is lead to suspect Dharamdas and his men. Dharamdas sets a trap of lies and deceits and shekhar caught in this cobweb of lies gets arrested, suspected and eventually loses his job. Will Shekhar be able to prove himself and secure his job while exposing the real villains behind the murder.

In the original release, the censor board cut out the song "Jaata Kahan Hai Dewaane' sung by Geeta Dutt since they found it vulgar. It can now be seen in the film's re-release.

Dev Anand gave Guru Dutt his big break as a director to make Baazi. Guru Dutt had promised Dev that when he turns producer he will have Dev to star in his production; a promise which he kept with this film.

The film marked Waheeda Rehman's screen debut.

Following the success of the film, Guru Dutt is said to have gifted Raj Khosla a swanky foreign car.
