Lara Croft an independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now at the age of 21 without any real focus or purpose, she navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. She refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as staunchly as she couldn't believe that he was dead. Even after seven years, she can't understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death. Going against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.

The plot of "Tomb Raider" was based on the 2013 reboot of the video game series.

Before Alicia Vikander was cast Daisy Ridley, Emilia Clarke, Saoirse Ronan, and Cara Delevingne were the frontrunners for Lara Croft.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in March 2013 announced that they acquired the rights to the "Tomb Raider" video game from Paramount Pictures, who let their film rights to the video game series expire after Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life failed to find audiences.

Due to Daisy Ridley's 2019 commitment to Star Wars: Episode IX, she had turned down the role of Lara Croft.

After Angelina Jolie, Alicia Vikander will not only be the second actress to portray Lara Croft in a movie, but also the second Oscar-winning actress to do the same.

Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander won in the same category, Best Supporting Actress. Jolie won in 2000 for Girl, Interrupted (1999) and Vikander won in 2016 for The Danish Girl (2015).

To keep her character as realistic as possible Alicia Vikander put on a lot of muscle to play Lara and also did all of her own stunts.

Announced was made that the reboot will be an adaptation of the 2013 Tomb Raider video game.

Initially, Olivia Wilde was rumored to be taking the role of Lara Croft which was later denied.

Gemma Arterton was interviewed by the Empire magazine on her 2012 vampire film Byzantium. The actress was told that she had been on many fan's wish-list for the role of Lara Croft and one of the series of twitter questions put to her by the interviewer asks, if she would be interested in playing Lara Croft and she gave the standard answer "If the script was good" and revealed she was a big fan of the video game as a teenager.

After Testament of Youth, Dominic West plays the role of Alicia Vikander's father for the second time.

To work on music for the film Junkie XL left Justice League.

Kathryn Bigelow, Mimi Leder and Catherine Hardwicke were considered to direct the film.

Angelina Jolie announced she didn't want to do another film as the iconic video game character after the release of Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. But in late 2013, there were rumors about her wanting to come back as Lara Croft.

Emily Carey who plays Young Lara is the same actress who played Young Diana as a teenager in Wonder Woman.

Kristen Stewart was offered the lead role but turned it down.

Tricia Brock passed on the film when was offered the chance to direct the film.
