Sonic, a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog from Planet Mobius comes to planet Earth to escape the evil forces that seek to harness his power of super speed. After accidentally causing a massive power outage in the city, the government hires the evil roboticist, Dr. Robotnik, to hunt down Sonic. Green Hills sheriff Tom Wachowski meets Sonic and decides to help him evade capture. Dr. Robotnik wants to use Sonic's power for world domination and to collect the rings.

Jim Carrey was attracted to this project because his daughter was a huge fan of Sonic the Hedgehog games growing up.
When the posters were released, the character's original designers Naoto Ohshima and Yuji Naka disliked Sonic's appearance which caused a major backlash. This design got a lot of negative feedback, and Sonic was redesigned to have a more faithful design.
Actors Tom Holland, Josh Gad, Chris Pratt, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Will Forte, Jim Parsons, Charlie Day, Paul Rudd, and Adam Devine were all considered for the voice of Sonic.
