Dr. Vasi (Rajnikanth) invents a super-powered robot, Chitti, in his own image. The scientific body, AIRD, that must approve the robot, declines it based on its not having emotions and the ability to make rational judgment. A sudden flash of lightning evokes emotions in the robot, and Chitti is seemingly ready for integration into the human world. Then, Chitti falls in love with Dr. Vasi's fiancée Sana (Aishwarya Rai) and turns on his creator.

Continuity
In several car chase shots, the car gets hit or has parts destroyed and in the next scene, the car in like new.

Crew/Equipment Visible
During the song sequence of Kadhal Anukkal, the light reflectors and the crew are visible through the reflections that come from Rajini's sun glasses in many shots, especially in the shot at the beginning of the song where Rajini sits with the guitar in his hand.

Miscellaneous
After the initial demonstration and charging, when Dr Vaseegaran transfers data (before Aishwarya drops at the Lab) the monitor shows "Nueral Schema" instead of "Neural Schema" - a spelling mistake in "Neural".

Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kamal Hassan and Ajith Kumar were all approached for the role of Dr Vasigaran/Chitthi.

This was director S Shankar's dream project, which he had wanted to do since 2001.

Shooting occured at SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri, Chennai from 23-27 August. There were more than 30 people dressed and made-up to look like the honorable thalaivar, Rajnikanth.

The role of Sana was initially offered to Preity Zinta who turned it down. Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Asin, Trisha Krishnan, Shreya Saran, Priyamani, and Nayanthara were then considered for the role before Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was eventually chosen.

Amitabh Bachchan, JD Chakravarthi, Narayan and Arjun were considered for the role of the villain.

In July 2007, Shah Rukh Khan was signed on to be the male lead of Chitthi as well as the producer of the film. However, in October 2007, Shahrukh Khan and Shankar officially called off the project. Khan commented that the script was "half-baked" and "dull" in comparison to his other films at the time.

According to Director Shankar he originally written movie for Kamal Hassan, and they even made a photo shoot for the promotion of the movie. The film was originally planned in 2001, and was to star Kamal Hassan and Preity Zinta.

Made on a budget of Rs.180 crores (approx US$40 million), this is the most expensive Indian movie ever made.

This movie was released in as many as on 2,250 screens worldwide, including in China.

The soundtrack of this movie became the Tamil film album to find its place in the iTunes World Album Top 10.

This is the first Indian sci-fi movie with 1,500 graphical shots

As for now this movie will be the last film that Rajini will play a youthful character, confirmed by Rajini that in future feature he will chose roles closer to his original age.

This is the eighth occasion in which iconic music director AR Rahman and director Shankar have teamed up.

Kottayam Nazir (famous mimicry artist from Kerala) dubbed for Cochin Hanifa, who passed away before he could dub for the movie.

Rajnikanth as the evil robot plays the villain after nearly 30 years. The last time he played the villain was in Netri Kann.
