Sandberg toned down to make Annabelle more believable as a child's toy in the film by softening some of her features such as having the cheeks filled-out and fixing her overbite.

Sandberg decided to use Steadicam and do tracking shots since it was on older movie and he wanted to continue the old school feel of the first two Conjuring films.
The director found shooting with the doll quite challenging since the object was immobile so he would need to use other objects – such as a sheet – to make her move around.
